Saltwater rinses are a simple way to cleanse and soothe the gums. If you had a generous squeeze of lemon juice it will be even more effective. Try rinsing with this twice daily to relieve sore gums and reduce gum inflammation. You can also dice the peel of a pomegranate and blanch it in two cups of water to make an effective gargle.
If your gums are swollen and painful to the touch, add two tablespoons of vinegar and one teaspoon of salt into four ounces of warm water and swish around the gum line for a few minutes.
Hydrogen peroxide mixed in equal portions with water makes an excellent rinse that will help relieve the pain, reduce inflammation and reduce plaque build-up on your teeth. In fact, you can use this rinse twice a week after gum disease has subsided in order to prevent plaque build-up and get rid of bacteria build-up in your mouth.
For painful, sensitive teeth and gums, black tea has astringent and pain relieving properties. Steep a few tea bags for a full six minutes and squeeze the bags out, then rinse your mouth with the tepid tea. If the area is particularly sensitive of swollen, put a few of the tea bags inside your mouth alongside the swollen gums and let sit for ten to fifteen minutes. Be careful not to bite down and break the tea bags open!
Making a paste of baking soda and water is another effective home remedy for gum disease. Simply rub the paste gently into the gums twice a day after brushing your teeth and rinsing your mouth thoroughly.
To take the edge off the pain of swollen gums and alleviate minor bleeding, try massaging coconut oil into your gums. The pain relief will kick in within minutes.
Clean teeth and gums are essential to keeping gum disease under control. You can find a variety of toothpastes on the market that help control plaque and tartar, but one of the most effective and inexpensive toothpastes is already in your kitchen. Crush some regular table salt until it is a powder, then combine one part salt with two parts baking soda. Brush your teeth with this twice a day (simply dip a wet toothbrush into the mixture) and your red, swollen gums will be a thing of the past. You can store this simple mixture in a small Tupperware container in your bathroom.
If your toothache is painful enough to be distracting, try adding a teaspoon of powdered cloves to some olive oil to make a thick paste. Packing the area around the pain with this paste will alleviate the pain and even freshen your breath.
If you try several of these home remedies for gum disease and still have painful, swollen or bleeding gums days later, it may be time for you to see a dentist.
