Home Remedies for Rosacea

Coping with the redness, inflammation and broken blood vessels that are common symptoms of Rosacea can be difficult. This common skin condition causes a lot of embarrassment, especially since most people have flare-ups that cause severe flushing whenever they are stressed, making it most noticeable just when they don’t want it to be.

Home remedies for rosacea are partly preventative in nature. You should avoid the typical triggers in order to minimize your rosacea whenever possible. The most common triggers are chocolate, alcohol and spicy foods as well as too much sun exposure or extremes of temperature, both hot and cold. If you can’t avoid triggers or are having bouts of rosacea anyway, try some of our home remedies for rosacea to reduce the severity of your symptoms.

Home Remedy Masks for Rosacea

Using a soothing facial mask is one of the most beneficial treatments for rosacea. An extremely effective one can be made from three or four raw tomatoes. Puree these and run through a sieve, then add a few tablespoons of finely ground oatmeal and a teaspoon of honey. Apply this to your face and let sit for about ten minutes, then carefully rinse off.

Another rosacea mask can be made by combining two tablespoons of fuller’s earth (found in naturopath shops, natural cosmetics stores and health food stores) with one beaten egg white and slowly adding bottled water (for purity) until a thick paste is formed. Apply this generously to the area and let sit for about fifteen minutes, then rinse clean.

To effectively soothe a flare-up of your rosacea symptoms, try making a thick paste out of plain yogurt and finely ground oatmeal. Leave this on your skin until completely dry (humidity will determine how long this takes), then rinse off. This mask will not only tame the redness and inflammation, it will give your skin a cool, refreshed feeling.

An older home remedy for rosacea comes from the east. Boil eight ounces of plums, then mash them without removing the peels. Add a teaspoon of almond oil and let the mixture cool completely before applying to your rosacea and relaxing for about fifteen minutes. Rinse with cool water. You can use this mask every day if needed.

A tablespoon of fuller’s earth mixed with a tablespoon of the juice of one raw potato is also a good home remedy for rosacea. To make it easier to remove the juice from the potato, try shredding or grating the potato into cheesecloth and gently squeezing out the juice.

Other Home Remedies for Rosacea

Some doctors believe that there is a direct link between digestive problems and rosacea. If you frequently feel bloated or that you are effectively digesting your meals, this may be the case for you. Getting your digestive system working more efficiently may help reduce your rosacea symptoms. Taking a good B-complex vitamin will improve the function of your digestive system, which may help reduce rosacea symptoms. A daily cup of fenugreek tea helps to keep rosacea symptoms under control, although how it works isn’t fully understood.

Finally, if you need to periodically bring down the inflammation and redness of rosacea, try brewing up a few cups of chamomile tea and keeping it in the refrigerator. Any time your rosacea is bothering you, soak a clean face cloth in the tea, ring out and place on the red areas as a cooling soothing compress. You can use this compress several times a day and leave on until the compress is no longer cool.

While there is no cure for rosacea, these home remedies will help control the symptoms and give your skin a fresher, clearer appearance.
