Home Remedies for Sinus Congestion

Nothing can be more uncomfortable or miserable than sinus congestion. Fortunately there are some great home remedies that you can use to ease your discomfort while you have a sinus condition or a cold.

Sinus congestion can cause very painful headaches that are the result of the pressure created by the congestion. When the congestion is reduced or eliminated, the headaches usually go away as well. Home remedies for sinus congestion can save you a trip to the doctor’s office or out to the store to buy expensive over the counter nasal sprays. These treatments can be done in your own home at a fraction of the cost of a product bought in the store or a prescription medication from the doctor.

Using Steam as a Home Remedy for Congestion

One of the best things that you can do for sinus congestion is steaming. Fill a bowl of boiling hot water and grab a towel. Cover your head with the towel and put your face directly over the steaming bowl of water. The towel should keep the heat and steam underneath where it can do you the most good. With a sinus headache, you will almost immediately feel the congestion breaking up and the headache being eliminated. This is also a great treatment for chest congestion. Breathe in through your nose for a sinus congestion and through your mouth for a chest congestion.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Mix eight ounces of water with one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a couple of shakes from the salt shaker. Shake the mixture up and drip the mixture through your nostrils. This mixture can also be used as a drink for a sore throat if necessary.

Garlic

Breathing garlic cloves will also help with nasal congestion. Some people even put cloves of garlic in each nostril to get the most benefits for their sinus congestion. This home remedy for sinus congestion might be a little smelly, but it works wonders. You can also make an amulet or pendant with garlic cloves for your child to breathe in the garlic while they are at home. The pendant can be made of gauze strips and placed high enough so that it is closest to your child’s nose. This will help to clear out any congestion in the sinus or nasal cavity.

Vinegar and Salt

You can create your own nasal spray with boiling water, vinegar and salt. Dissolve a half of a teaspoon of salt and a half of a tablespoon of distilled vinegar in a cup of boiling water. Let it cool and use it like an atomizer or nasal spray product. If you have a nasal spray bottle that has been thoroughly cleaned out, this will work well for your home made nasal spray. You can also use a dropper and simply drip the mixture into your nostrils.

Try a few of these home remedies for sinus congestion to find the one that will work well for you. You might have to try a combination of treatments to get some relief from your sinus congestion.
