Most home remedies for tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, address how to tolerate the sound or learn to mask it because tinnitus is extremely difficult to get rid of. Take heart, however, as there are a few home remedies that seem to work for about half the people who have chronic ringing in the ears.
The first thing you should do if you have tinnitus is talk to your doctor and get a physical, particularly if the ringing is accompanied by dizziness or other symptoms. The tinnitus may be caused by high blood pressure or a disease that can cause complications. If you continue to have ringing in the ears after underlying problems have been eliminated, it’s time to take action.
Many people with tinnitus only notice the ringing in their ears at night or when it is quiet. If this is the case for, try masking the sound with “white noise” such as a static-filled radio station or a bit of background noise such as running water or a television with the volume turned very low. Sometimes this makes the ringing recede into the background where it is less troublesome.
You can also reduce the severity of tinnitus over time if you switch to a no caffeine, low fat diet with very few sugars. Cutting out alcohol can also help over time. Anyone with tinnitus should avoid taking aspirin, as it can increase the ringing in your ears.
If your tinnitus is driving you crazy, try taking 300 mg of CoEnzyme Q-10 daily. You should begin to hear a difference in about two weeks. Eating pineapple daily also reduced inflammation of the ear canal, which can contribute to tinnitus.
One of the most popular home remedies for tinnitus is a simple spray you can make at home. Just stir one teaspoon of salt and one teaspoon of glycerin into a pint of warm water, then spray or squirt the mixture into each nostril until it runs down the back of the throat. After this, spray some toward the back of your throat to coat all surfaces. This bathes the ear canal and throat in a soothing anti-inflammatory. You can try this up to three times daily.
An ancient remedy that’s still very popular is the use of either maidenhair tree extract or ginkgo biloba extract. Dropping between 20-40 milligrams of either one of these into the ear canal every day for four to six weeks can bring about a major reduction of the noise of tinnitus.
If you can’t find these natural tree extracts at your local health food store or herbalist’s shop, try using sesame oil instead. Simply put one or two drops in each ear, lying with your head to the side until the oil gets down into the ear canal on each side.
Finally, consider giving your blood circulation a bit of a boost by soaking your feet alternately in cold and warm water, switching back and forth to each one at least twice. This will improve blood circulation and reduce the swelling in the blood vessels of your feet, reducing the ringing substantially.
These home remedies for tinnitus should minimize the amount of ringing of the ears you can hear to a manageable level or get rid of the sound completely.
